On Weight

We stopped at a grocery store on our way back from a wedding reception. We were pretty busy at the store. DH was picking stuff from his mental to-buy list. Figlia was busy picking things from our never-buy/dont-need list, and was trying out stuff with lids too. I was busy covering her tracks and cleaning the cart simultaneously. I veered towards the pastry counter, but something else stopped me in between.

I haven't seen myself in a full-length mirror the way I saw myself that evening. I was stunned to see my reflection. I have gained weight. Like, a lot. I don't need a scale, I have accommodated a whole baseball bat in my pelvis horizontally.

I do have a full length mirror at home, but I have hardly needed it in a while now. I don't even comb my hair in front of a mirror. Sheesh.

I have always felt that I do not assess myself the way others assess me, and that holds true weight-wise too. But oh boy, would I like to go back to the weight when I first thought I was over-weight!

1. If you ever got a chance for wishing (and it was compulsory to wish, and you couldn't ask or say "both"), what would you choose? Being thinner or being prettier?

2. Did I  still buy the pastry?

3. I hate standing on the scale. I never keep one at home. Do you?

  1. My answer to #1 is skewed by the (probably unfair) fact that I've always been thin. My highest average/standing weight was in high school -- 48.75kg. Pregnant with Gwen I peaked at 59.1kg, but I lost 10kg the first week after she was born and since about 4 months I've been back between 44 and 47kg, never quite sure exactly what because while (#3) we do have a scale, I rarely use it. We bought it mostly because I wanted to track my weight while pregnant. We now use it every 2-3 months for Gwen, so that we're weighing her on a consistent scale. So yes, I'd absolutely want to be prettier rather than thinner. I've never considered myself to be traditionally pretty, and I already have a hard enough time clothes shopping without being any smaller.

#2: I'm guessing no, but not necessarily for reasons directly stemming from weight. I would be curious to know the answer, and the reasons.

  2. 1. I would probably go with thinner, just because I think it's probably healthier. Plus, I've never been "pretty" - I was stuck eternally on "cute" but now I'm in the middle-aged-not-ugly-or-terribly-old-looking category.

    2. I would say yes?

    3. We do not own a scale.

  3. I wrote about my own weight and posted a pic of the body that I barely recognized and didn't like: http://itiswhatitisorisit.net/?p=4943.

I wish I could go back to when I was thinner yet thought I was fat. I would take thinner any day as pretty is subjective.

I'm guessing you did not buy the pastry but you must let us know.

I have always owned a scale as truly it and a measuring tape are the only ways for me to objectively judge my weight (that, and the size clothing I'm wearing but even that can range widely between manufacturers).

That said, our Wii is actually more accurate and as I have recently re-joined WW, it weighs me the same as their calibrated digital scales (whereas our digital scale weighs 2 lbs heavier (and WHO needs THAT)).

  4. 1. Could I choose, simply, "healthier"? I guess thinner (but not too thin).

    2. Um, yes?

    3. I do.

  5. Thinner for sure but I don't know if I would ever feel "thin enough".
I hate scales and while I have one I rarely use it. The number depresses me.

  6. Oh, drat. Weight. I lost some earlier this year, gained it back and some change. Duck. And I am tired and moody. I choose thinner.
    2. I dunno. I would have, most probably. Did you .
    3. Yes, I own scales, and no, I haven't been on it since. I gained back the darned weight, because i do not need the numbers to depress me even more, I have the pants to remind me every day of that particular fact.
