No, Don't

"No, Don't" seems to get repeated a noticeable number of times in the household. Figlia can be found sucking her own socks, pulling or scrunching doormats, licking railings and throwing stuff around. She threw my cell phone on the floor today morning. And proceeded to bend down from the bed to watch its helpless plight.

"No, Don't!"

I picked up the phone and put it back on the bed. Not many seconds passed before the phone verified the law of gravity again. She again tried to make her way to the bed's edge to watch it. That's when, my "No, Don't" changed its pitch, and I gave Figlia a momentary glare.

Oh boy! Her face immediately melted into one of deep pain, and she put her head down and began crying.

She had been scolded, and she understood it. It is not the first time Figlia has picked up my sentiment and reacted to it, but still. I immediately picked her up, soothed her while the snot flowed onto my sweater and tears rolled down her cheeks, and I calmed her.

I told her that it's not a good thing to throw things like this.

That sentiment was definitely lost on her because within the hour, in a different room, a can was flung down.

  1. It does melt your heart when they cry after a scolding. At our house, I tend to get three in tears when I scold only one of them. I have to be very careful that I say the name of the offender first or it's like I scolded them all!

As exhausting as this age is, it's also pretty fun to watch them develop, isn't it? I love to see how their minds take in and process what is going on around them!

    Many hugs!

  2. Awww. V does that now too. I find myself yelling, "No! Stop." or "Don't touch." a lot, and then redirecting his attention elsewhere. He gets really upset when I tell him to stop going in the kitchen, and the full blown theatrics/tantrum begins. Absolutely melts your heart, even if you know it's what's good for them!

  3. No - the largest part of your vocabulary for the next 18 years or so... :)

  4. I think George did that too. Until he started talking back. And when I tell him to stop whatever shenanigan he is up to, he stops on his tracks, looks at me and puts up his palm (sort of "talk to the hand" gesture) and tells me on various intonations "TOP". It was cute the first two hundred times and I just couldn't stop laughing. Now that he does that every time he disagrees with anyone, not so fun anymore.

  5. We're at that stage, too, and I decided a few weeks ago to consciously make an effort to say "yes" as often as I can. Does it really matter if she pulls everything out of the drawer in the nightstand and dumps it on the floor? Is it really a problem if she pulls all the wipes out of the container? Or the books off the shelves? (She's quite careful with them.) I'd rather save my Nos for things that are dangerous or she could break. It certainly makes me happier to not have to be so negative.
