My Social Bits

My personal calls all get done wee early in the morning ( 6 am to 7 am anyone?) or when I am in office and making good use of the phone in my you-wouldn't-believe-how-big-and-ginormous cabin, and sometimes when I am returning to home from work.

Yesterday, I was speaking to my mum on my trip back, when I managed to ask her if I was this way too - that fighting sleep bit.

Yes, I was.

How long?

For a couple of months.

My jaw dropped.

I do remember references to my mother praying and carrying me around to make me sleep. I also recall references to the fact that I sometimes used to cry, and it was difficult for my mum to discern what was causing it.

I remember those bits, but I had never digested that as well and as hard as I did, yesterday evening. And it never made as much sense to me as it did last evening.

If Figlia is going my way, I do know that she will turn into a good sleeper eventually.

But I now understand how hard it must have been for my mum.

Last evening was another vomit session at home. But guess what? Little Miss fell asleep at 8:30 pm. Except that I had not finished dressing her up.

And I was so hooked to the idea of her voluntarily closing her eyes, that I did not burp her after she finished her last feed because I was afraid of waking her up.

Now, I can't say that this sudden change is again a permanent shift to the better, so do not congratulate me. I actually could not believe that she slept just like that.

It is more than clear to me that the daycare schedule is playing havoc with the sleeping. She keeps playing there and does not settle down for much time. Her naps there are hardly of any strong length. Her routine is 15 minutes, and the longest she puts in is 1 hour or so. And if she has managed to take her second nap for less than an hour, or if she is done with her noon nap at 2 o'clock, she will take a short nap at 6 o'clock at home. This 6 o'clock has knocked off her 8:30 pm time-for-bed.

Yesterday, she slept two hours straight at the creche, waking up at around 4:15 pm. That meant that she did not sleep at 6 in the evening.

And that made her ready to conk at 8:30 pm.

But making her sleep in the daycare is an issue. And ensuring that she does not go off to sleep at 6 o'clock at home is another issue.

Eventually, we will all grow out this phase.

  1. You're sounding much more perky this morning! It's amazing how even one day of better sleep can change your outlook, even if it's a fluke.

(Saturday, I was all set for a miserable day when Gwen woke at 5:50am, which had been usual for awhile but not lately. I left her in her bed talking to herself until she really started fussing at 6:30, at which time I fed her. 10 minutes later she was back asleep, and she slept three more hours! I didn't get out of bed until 9:40. It was amazing.)

  2. Ugh, we've been dealing with the same thing over here. My MOm also told me that none of her kids were good sleepers. UGh.

Daycare is also an issue - yesterday when I dropped Stella off, I told her to put her down by 10am for her first time. She listened to me, and Stella slept for 2 1/2 hrs (longest nap ever!). Then she NEVER PUT HER DOWN for her 2nd nap. Not cool. So Stella was up from 12:15-5:45, and as soon as I got her home, I put her down, and she slept from 5:45-6:30, but that WAY screwed up the 8pm bedtime we have been doing. Frustrating.

Hopefully we will both be sleeping more soon.

  3. Hoping that you get more sleep, on a regular basis, soon!

  4. Can you ask the creche for more regular nap times? I would think that would work out better for them anyway.

I do think parents love it when the things we did as children manifest in our children. Seeing as I was at all times a perfect angel, I have a delightful little wonder. :) Actually, she's kind of the opposite of me - she talks non-stop where I was usually pretty quiet. But she is an easy child...as I assume I was.

  5. I think a lot of little ones have this issue of over-stimulation at daycare and it wreaking havoc with their sleep patterns. Here's hoping she finds a happy new pattern (or a return to the old one) soon.
