It took me a while, but I like the new house. And the neighbourhood holds the promise of playmates for Figlia. A grandma we met at the park one evening has a two month old grandchild, and she was so excited to see Figlia. My neighbour (who is not here currently and will be here in June , I heard) has got six month old twins. Nice, eh?
And every morning I watch out for a squirrel I have named BentTail, and couples walk around the neighbourhood. And there is a Casuarina tree in my view.
I love Casuarina, mostly because I find its name pretty delightful....the name just rolls around in the mouth...cas-u-a-rina....cas-uari-na.
***
Every evening Figlia and I go out for a walk in the neighbourhood. Figlia focuses on the children playing in the park. People stop by to speak to her, cootchie-coo her or to tell me that I haven't clothed her enough / appropriately.
***
There is magical chemistry between DH and Figlia. Figlia loves her Papa, plain and simple. And it shows.
***
I feel very emotional and overwhelmed at times. When I was new in the house, it was particularly so. Just overwhelmed.
When my mother left and I was totally alone with the baby, it did get to be riding on my nerves.
And the initial days in this house, Figlia would just cry and not settle down for the night. We would walk around, taking turns, till she slept in our arms and then we would put her down.
I was scared that this would become a consistent behaviour.
That episode passed.
I still get emotional and sometimes my anxiety rides high.

"Can't pack my bag and leave"
Suddenly it seems that I am the only one who can't pack up their bag and leave.
Everyone else can, and does.
My parents got busy with their own life. My brother and his wife get a distant view of my life and they can't still understand anymore than the cuteness that my baby is. To be fair, my mother has promised to come around frequently and be with us. But I feel unfair to be disrupting her life/routine like this.
Hubby's family and his cousins are all living a life of their own with acknowledgement of the new member in the family. But they are living their routine.
Hubby gets to go to the gym, the office, the picnics/day trips...he can plan a meal out with his man-friends without batting an eyelid. He does not do the last bit without telling me first, but I am fired that he still has the opportunity to be daddy and have a good social life.
He recently poked me about why I did not sleep more in the morning.
'I just want to drink my cup of tea in peace.' While he can be non-rushed in his pursuits, I regularly schedule my peace of mind.

Niece was visiting us for a few hours. She was munching on something and looked at a picture on the wall."Mumma, is that Figlia?", she asked. My SIL took cipher time in responding to the question in a yes.
She knows it was CBub's pic.
She says that she never talked about what happened to the 'baby' with her daughter, and my niece believes that the baby I now have is from the pregnancy then.
***
Less than a week into our new abode, Figlia got diarrhoea. I was frazzled. It took 4 - 5 days for the thing to settle, but it eventually did. Everytime she pooped, my heart sunk lower and lower.
***
Mummy was with us when we came to UsualCity. Thanks to her, I was able to unpack. She came and stayed us again in mid-May for 4 - 5 days.
***
I can't and won't go back to work unless I find someone suitable for Figlia. And so far my nanny search has been a disaster. I did not have many options, and the one lady who turned up was well, so ahem!
She came to first day of work with a deep cough. She had to be told to please keep her hand on her mouth while coughing. She told me she did not like to stay alone and wanted to be able to talk to someone. She followed me around the day she was here, when I essentially wanted her to be around Figlia.
She was given an off the next day because of her cough. Day three she did not turn up on her own. The same thing happened on day four and I sent her a courteous message to not bother coming back.
***
Figlia is now 14.2 pounds and 25.9 inches. She began drooling. She imitates and is definitely a foot stomper.
She sits on my lap, her back resting on my body, supported and held.
And I finally realized that I do not have to rush to her everytime I hear her stirring or making sounds in her sleep, because several times, she just goes back to sleep.
We now wake up twice every night for feeding. Figlia can continue to remain awake and play in the dark for a while.
She now attempts to hold her bottle.
Figlia is a fan of ceiling fans. They can't escape her notice.
She focuses on the kids in the park, especially the running around and the noises that the children make.
And hands are interesting. They are regularly being tasted...
***
We took Figlia to her routine immunization to Dr. T. It was Dr. T who had taken care of CBub finally.
I snuck to go see their NICU. What was I thinking? That I might see CBub in her incubator? The corner she was in is emblazoned on my brain.
The blinds were drawn. I could not see one thing inside.
***
Initially Figlia too little to no interest in her play gym. Now she does and her latest antic is to try and bring the butterflies on it, into her mouth. Fails every time.
***
My April spotting continued till May 3. Then, on May 13, the spotting came back and stayed till 28-29th May. I am not sure how long we are stuck in this land.
But do you know what I am grateful for? That I have no middle of the night crazy gushes. That I can still get away with a night of sleep that is not broken by crazy bleeding. I leave the waking up to Figlia.

There have been certain revelations
- My husband deals with uncertainty better than me. I am just a jumping jack in such situations.
- My absence in UsualCity made him a better socializer. He does not make friends easily, but he did build up a friend circle.
- The wanting another child is still an open option for us. Open does not necessarily mean yes, and it does not shut the door either.

People have been dropping off the family tree. In my family and the extended family (of DH) there have been four deaths this May. Three of them were old and sick. One of them was under-30 and a new mum.

It took a while, but if you wish to, you can call me Dr. Elsie. :-)
Heartfelt congratulations, DR. Elsie! It is quite an accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteYou sound you have adjusted to your new environment. I am very happy to hear that. Waking up only two times a night is wonderful (in my book at least), hopefully she is sleeping thorugh the night soon. You will find your new routine, and someone to watch Figlia, and all things will settle when they do and then you will see where life has taken you. Hopefully to a new, lovely place. Open options sound like what you need right now. Consuming desires are burning holes, so open options are rather more desirable.
Dr.! That's wonderful, congratulations! I have so much admiration for people how pursue that degree and have a child at the same time; I'm very thankful that I completed the Ph.D. before Gwen was a twinkle in anyone's eye.
ReplyDeleteThere is magical chemistry between DH and Figlia. Figlia loves her Papa, plain and simple. And it shows.
That's just beautiful.
WOW! Congrats Dr. Elsie!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd welcome back, glad to hear that all is well. Hang in there, you'll find your groove and you will get some semblance of your life back.!
Congratulations Dr :-) and most importantly welcome back. Ive missed you.
ReplyDeleteHi there Dr. Elsie! I have missed you and am so glad your back and all is going well!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Dr. Elsie! I do so hope you can find a good nanny soon - I know it takes a lot of trial and error but I've found word of mouth recommendations are the best. Then you can have your lovely cup of tea. :-) Hugs to Figlia!
ReplyDeleteCongrats, DR! It sounds like you are finding your footing w parenting. Now you can start working on getting that "me" time. I hope u have btr luck in the nanny hunt.
ReplyDeleteCongrats Dr!!! It sounds like you are adjusting well. I hope you can find a nanny soon. As far as everyone else being able to pack up and leave-I can identify, but I can also say that most of my friends who are moms are in the same situation. It's something I am rather resentful of in our house. My husband goes golfing with friends, plays his stupid video game online with friends and no matter what I do pretty much unless I am at work or at a doctors appointment (and sometimes not even then) I have the children. It just doesn't seem fair. That said, DH limits his golfing to once a month. I get time away from the kids with friends maybe once a year of I'm lucky. The last time I remember being anywhere child free with a friend was 2 years ago. It's hard. Hugs to you. And welcome back, I missed you!
ReplyDeleteDr. Elsie! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteSounds like it's been quite an upheaval and you are finally getting adjusted. I hope you can find a proper nanny - the one you had sounds absolutely awful.
I'm sorry that your SIL would rather bury her head in the sand than confront hard truths. Kids can handle more than most people think...
It's time to set up a schedule for you to get some time out/away - your husband and Figlia can spend a few hours a week staring lovingly into each others' eyes while you get some peace of mind somewhere away from home.
dr. elsie! i love it, congratulations!! the new neighborhood sounds lovely, i'm glad figlia will have some playmates. isn't it annoying how the husband can just make plans and pretty much do whatever he wants while we stay home with the babies? it really chaps my ass sometimes. i'm sure your mother doesn't mind interrupting her routine to come and visit her granddaughter, i know mine doesn't, she lives on the other side of the country and comes to visit two or three times a year (i usually go there twice a year as well). that nanny sounds absolutely horrid, i hope you are able to find someone good so you can use all that education of yours, good luck my friend!
ReplyDeleteDR. Elsie!!! My most heartfelt congratulations!!! I am glad that after the move Figela is settling down some, but I know that it is very hard with an infant. And the DH irritation thing, if you are like me, it will remain with you for quite a long time (the boys are almost 3 and it continues....). I hope you find a nanny suitable to you and Figela, certainly one that is devoid of a nasty cough. My goodness, Eww!
ReplyDeleteCongrats DR. Elsie :D
ReplyDeleteSo much in this post.
That had to be hard on you when that happened with your niece.
I'm glad you're settling in at home now, and I am all too familiar with not having any "me" time while everyone else is completely free to so as they wish. It's hard sometimes. I have to plan out my jogs, when I want to eat (and then half the time he wakes up to eat just as I'm sitting down anyway!)... so I understand. It does get easier, but it's still hard.
I hope you can find a nanny sometime soon. I can only imagine how difficult that search might be. I haven't left V alone with *anyone* except DH so far.
Hey! So good to see a post from you again and congratulations Dr!!! I'm glad that you've settled down in the new place and that Figlia is doing well. I love what you wrote about her and DH. Oh and I hear you about "can't pack my bag and leave". With baby #1 that had me screaming at the walls sometimes that I wanted my life back... This time around I was prepared for it. But still...
ReplyDeleteNice to see you back on the internetz dr!
ReplyDeleteCongrats!!!
I'm sure the adjusting to all of this newness is hard, but as usual, you seem to be handling it with grace.
Doctor, eh? Congratulations!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, that was a loooot of news. I am very glad to hear Figlia sleeping well now, and learning to self-soothe. Sounds like things are looking up?
Congrats, Dr. Elsie!! Soooo happy for you!!
ReplyDeleteWhew - it's been a busy May for you. And those were just snippits! I'm happy to hear you are settling in your new home and that there will be lots of little ones for Figlia to play with. Heck, I'm happy to hear from you period.
I know just what you mean. It seems like it would make more sense to try and sleep in but I've learned it does my mind good if I get up 30 minutes or so before Skeeter so I can enjoy my tea in peace, watch a little news and love on the cats. It is just an all around better start to my day.
Wonderful news...congratulations :) Lovely to hear all your news and that you' settling in... any move or change can be so hard. Your daughter sounds so darling... lovely to hear her stories. Thinking of you xoxo
ReplyDeleteYou finished! Congratulations! Always an accomplishment, but particularly so with a distraction as big as Figlia.
ReplyDeleteBIG Congrats to you for completing your Doctorate! So proud of you.
ReplyDeleteI love envisioning Figlia with her papa.
Welcome to your new digs!
Way to hide the awesome news at the end of your post!! That is very exciting-Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the nanny search. I hope you find someone sooner rather than later.
Congrats!!!
