I have been visiting SuperGyn's clinic every day since mid-December.
One of the current concerns which she seems to verbalize every time is that, for all the dopplers that have been done (once a week so far; rest of the days I let CTG take over), Season seems to be doing well on most of the fetal parameters - BPD, HC and FL.
But, Season has been consistently lagging on AC (Abdominal Circumference). In fact the circumference has been same for the past two dopplers (five-six days in between). The kid is active, so far all CTG reports have been good and no other problem appears in sight.
1. Should this lagging AC be of any importance to me?
2. Can it mean something, that the SuperGyn can't sweet-coat for me?
3. Would you be concerned about it?
4. Does this actually mean I am likely to have a very thin/low-weight baby?
SuperGyn just insists that the baby must put on more weight. That is what she has been telling me all the time. And I weighed in 600 gms lower today, which is funny, coz I never lost weight so consistently before.
(Short note: My weight steadily creeped up during the first and second trimester, and into the third, but then I lost two kgs, and gained that back, and weighed in tiny bit less again today.
Also, Season's EFW at 34 weeks is 2.1 kg.)

Hmmm, I have no idea. So what does SuperGyn say what the consequences can be (other than just being a thin baby)...?
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I don't know.... so hard to have something "off" that you can't directly do anything about..
ReplyDeleteI know it is pretty typical for some moms to not gain weight in the 3rd trimester, and some even loose. Appetites go away, and stomachs are squished, so it is difficult to eat. It is such a catch 22 with all the close monitoring. For someone in your position, I understand fully the reasoning for it. But the results seem to produce more anxiety than anything else. I have heard so many stories online via bloggers and birth stories where developmentally the babies aren't measuring within the "normal curve" on some parameter, and the docs shake their heads and furrow their brows, and the moms worry and worry, and then everything turns out fine. Ultrasound measurements can be inaccurate. But, of course, with CheekyBub, we know that sometimes things don't turn out okay. If it is something that doesn't concern the doctor enough to consider induction/surgery, then there really is nothing you can do. I'm so sorry for this one additional point of worry on top of all the other heavy worries on your heart.
ReplyDeleteThat EFW does not sound terribly low. And the AC can change if she has dropped or if she changed position.
ReplyDeletehi from ICLW, my sister is in a similar situation, and shes already a worry wart as it is.. my advice is to take it easy and hope for the best, it usually all works out in the end
ReplyDeleteWho knows what's normal on that front? There are no flat bellies in my family tree, so it's likely that my daughter had a higher than average AC. She still does. It may just be the way Season is built - I wouldn't concern yourself, since the weight is where it should be. Plus, isn't this about the time where the baby starts putting on the extra fat to get it through the first couple days?
ReplyDeleteThe hard part about so much more monitoring is that there always seems to be something to worry about. :( Season's weight seems fine to me. I'd try not to worry.
ReplyDeleteI did drink a lot of carnation instant breakfast. I could never eat more than a few bites, so the instant breakfast helped to get in the calories.
Many hugs!
Along the lines of what Are You Kidding Me said, I'd calibrate my worry based on genetics. If my husband were built like me (sturdy), I'd worry about a skinny kid. My husband is very tall and thin, so having one of our twins be very tall and very thin (and the other very tall with a body that fits the height) doesn't worry me, whereas having such a skinny baby/kid would worry me if his father hadn't been built the same way.
ReplyDeleteThat's on the basis of external measurement, though. Fetal measurements can be SO far off.
I know it's impossible, but try not to worry. Do ask SuperGyn frank questions, though.
I really think Season is ok. Everything is measuring ok for the most part and AC's can vary. I think as long as Season looks ok, I would just go with it. Also, that EFW can be off by as much as half a kilo, and even at 2.1kg for a 34 weeker it's not really that low. Hang in there.
