Being around 'It'

The last time I was at SuperGyn's and I was pacing the small distance from her office to the ultrasound room, I (first heard) and then saw from the crack of an open door, a couple of women who were crying. I asked what happened. I was shushed and taken to the room, where I lay down for the ultrasound. After it was done, and my mom was busy talking to the tech, I asked this 'maid' about what was wrong.

They had lost a baby. The woman came for an ultrasound and there was no heartbeat.

Today I went for a doppler scan in the afternoon (not at SuperGyn's) and was sitting in the waiting area with women of differing pregnant bellies. And there was one who looked like she was about to pop.

I whispered about her to my mom and asked if this squirming neighbour was full-term. Mother guessed either that or she was expecting twins. Later I got called into the office, and witnessed this squirmer's mom being called in. The news was bad. One of the twins who had severe IUGR no longer had a heartbeat. The woman was barely pushing 34 weeks. The lady was advised to report to the Gyno immediately.

I went into the 'chamber' and as I was about to lie down, it struck me that I was occupying the same bed that this squirmer had used. On the screen her stats were still there. I had just taken the bed after a woman who had lost a baby.

I know that woman's name and I know that there will be one child for where there were two.

My mom walked in. My mother seemed aware that I 'knew' and had heard. I asked my mom about the dead baby. The non-doctor mom told me to only have positive thoughts - look at the other baby who was doing well. That I don't know what good may have happened.

And I asked - 'Do you use the same logic for CheekyBub?'

There was silence.

(Why would my mother shut my rational self with an explanation she herself doesn't believe? Not because she is unable to grasp my curiosity or such, but she just tries to shield and shield and shield. It is okay, mother. It is okay.)

There is still so much I can't process about babies dying. But I have seen two strikes already in the consequent appointments. I don't want to feel like a bringer of bad luck. But when someone else's baby dies, should I sigh with relief that it wasn't me (which hasn't happened so far) or just think that it is an odd coincidence that I am around this about every time recently?

My doppler went well. Baby is fine. In about three weeks I will be going back for an Anomaly Scan. Armed with the report of the doppler and the blood tests I underwent recently, I will be going to SuperGyn in a couple of days.

I have superwomaned through all the tests including the Quad Screen - low-risk for any defects and all. My hemoglobin is marginally lower than the standard, but all else is okay.

  2. Wow. What an intense experience, to be in that space. What I was thinking as I read it, was that you, so much more than so many, could approach that space with sympathy and respect, and not just sigh with relief. (Though we all sigh with relief that Season is doing well.)

  3. I am so happy to hear that you and Season are fine. And sighing with relief, for that matter.
As for dead babies - it is heartbreaking no matter the context. Babies should not die. Ever. But you do not bring bad luck. It's just that bad things happen to too many good people.
    Hugs.

Be assured that you are not a bringer of bad luck. It's simply a case of shit happens.

  5. What a difficult experience for you. :( It always tears me up to see/hear of such things, and to be pregnant... You KNOW what it feels like to lose a baby. Nothing makes it "all better," not thinking positive or ignoring it. But you can pray for them, for their shattered worlds and broken hearts, send them healing thoughts. Definitely be thankful & relieved Season is still growing. No baby deserves to die and nobody can bring bad luck to cause a baby to die. It just happens. Like Lola. Just happened, no blame, just horrific luck. I am ever so thankful that Season gracefully flew through another test. The weeks are going by!

  6. It's hard when you're so close to women who are experiencing loss so rawly, in such a setting. You are definitely not a bringer of bad luck though, bad things... just happen. And it sucks :(

So glad your little bub is doing good, I hope things continue well.

  7. Those babies dies because their own individual circumstances, not because you have bad mojo circling around you- though I understand it's hard not to feel you have a black cloud above your head.

  10. What an intense experience. I am so glad that you and season are doing well. You are NOT the bringer of bad tidings, but I can only imagine how these incidents must have struck you. It's almost unfathomable to me.......

  11. I often wonder about the women who no doubt saw me walk out of *that* ultrasound. I have had my suspicions about a few women since. I hate sitting in waiting rooms. Sadly, not all of us walk out of them with good news.
I'm glad on this instance, you did.

  12. It's common, more common than you think. It probably happens whenever they have a big block of appointments. I felt like I was always getting that kind of news.

I'm glad everything looks good so far.

Season...

With very limited time and access to the netz, I just want to declare that Lady Season is here. She arrived last Wednesday, and I will someday in future speak of how due to SuperPed's preparedness a crisis was averted. I tend to have firework endings. Her with me, and my first chance of mothering is like a spray of cold water on my face. I am very sleep deprived. Apparently, wise birds said to me that I should sleep when the girl sleeps, but so far my body schedule and kid's schedule are haywire. I hope to be better adapted to this soon. It is tough for me to find net time as of now, and there are a couple of things I want to post online, since CBub's dates also passed by recently, but so far it does not seem to be happening. And I just want to say thanks. Even though I am craptastic at responding, I am reading off and on as I can manage.
