My niece was a party to my pregnancy through the discussions that used to happen between her and her family. She was able to point out where the baby was because she would raise one finger strongly pointing at my belly.
Her mother told her that she will have to give some of her toys and infant clothes to her aunt's baby. She agreed because by kid logic, at 2 1/2 she was already grown up. She was so aware of the baby, that she used to enquire about the baby without any pressing or word-feeding by her mom. for e.g., she once asked me if the baby had come. That was October, so I told her that the baby would come in February.
One evening before the operation, I was talking to my SIL and she told me that my niece was so excited. You see, my niece was going to bathe the baby, feed her and take her to school. Everybody was excited.
I have spoken to my niece only once since January. I wonder if she remembers the baby, or asks about the little one.

We tend to settle in front of the TV at night. It is in the living room and we watch it till we (I or him or both of us) are ready to sleep. One night, Birdman was coaxing me to come to bed but I was not quite sleepy yet. With all the cuteness that he could muster, he said, 'Let's sleep - you, me and baby.'
Before my eyes closed finally for the night, he said lovingly about how cozy the baby was in there (it had been a bit cold that night).

You brought me memories this morning... Thinking of you and of all of us...
ReplyDeleteI have noticed how much the little moments haunt me, much more than the big, grand, picture-taking moments. Thinking of you.
ReplyDeleteThe little moments count for so much...both in good times and bad. What a sad, beautiful memory.
ReplyDeleteMy neighour's kids were young when Matilda died. One of them who was three at the time used to ask me about Matilda from time to time even months later which surprised me.
ReplyDeleteThinking of you. xx
thank you for sharing your cozy memories. it makes me smile. i hope in time, these memories bring you some comfort (Tippy)
ReplyDeleteYou'll be surprised at how much your niece remembers, and she will probably ask you about the baby.
ReplyDeleteIt's tough to have these beautiful memories knowing that there is an ending that doesn't live up to the promise. But I think the fact that they're in your mind is a sign that you are reaching a different stage of the healing process.
