Are you Fitter than a FitterGrader?

I like the title of the post. You don’t have to tell me because I am in love with my originality…truly madly deeply and no, the adjectives have got nothing to do with Savage Garden either.

The basis of this particular post lies in one of my March posts ...nopes, I had not forgotten the comments or swept them away, they contributed to what I have come with today.

To recap, I spoke of the bloated feeling I was still experiencing and the desire to lose some weight.

I am still adamant on one aspect, and that is that my weight cannot be held responsible for my fertility, or its lack thereof…because there are so many other things that the docs will have to justify to me then. And as far as BMI indicators go, I am not obese, I am overweight...and that is nothing unusual.

But I think that becoming fitter will boost my self-confidence and control my oestrogen levels…I had several options in mind…

A. Walking/Jogging

B. Joining a Gym for Exercises

C. Joining this one personal care and health centre that specialises in spot reductions through passive exercises

D. Yoga

E. Swimming

Out of the above, I am completely through with thinking over the first four, and am veering towards D right now.

My least favourite of these options, is ‘A’. I don’t have an athlete gene in me…and I cannot do it for lack of a good walking/jogging track nearby. My husband likes to go for a jog, but I am not him.

I did check out a really nice Gym very close to my home (for me proximity was the key). I checked it out last month…And there are two limitations that I can see outright. For one, I found it expensive. For two, it is good to be a member there, but what happens if I move/decide to leave? It does not appear feasible to me to be able to set up all the equipment at home, exactly like what I had in the gym.

Joining EEEE (personal care and health centre, option C) was an option for me from the very beginning, and I had one prior experience of the same…but I know that the benefits of the programme are not lasting, and I had regained all the weight I had lost in a few months. So here money was not the issue…the issue was whether I wanted to be quick and yo-yoed again?

In the current ICLW patrol, I found this one blogger who was writing about how happy she was attending a Fertility Yoga workshop. Well, there is nothing specialized available here…

On a colleague’s recommendation, I decided to go check out a Yoga class in my vicinity today. When I reached there, I found this middle aged guy with this long dark black beard, long flowing hair with a red teeka on his forehead, speaking to a family – mother, daughter and son-in-law. The mother had come there for losing weight. She was 109 kgs.

Anyways, the whole set up was in an open corridor, and I just took a seat on a wooden bench kept close by.

I got to meet the guruji. But in full presence of all the others…that family, and attendants and other people…

Me: I wanted to know about the Yoga classes here.

Him: Oh yes, for women, we run it for an hour in the morning: 0615 – 0715 Hrs.

Me: Oh OK, any other time? Like, in the evening?

Him: At XYZ hours.

I wanted to discuss out what I wanted from the exercise. (Was very conscious of the audience that I had)

Me: Guruji, you see, for about a few days every month, I am not wanting to do strenuous exercise, anything that would put a pressure on my stomach.

Him: We teach everything here.

Me: I would like to lose a bit of weight here. (Pointed at the lower half of my body)

Him: Then buy an atta chakki and use it at home.

(I was floored by how rude he was! An atta chakki, the traditional one is composed of two stones and the top one has a wooden handle…grains are fed into the centre and the wooden handle is rotated, turning the grains into flour. In old days, everybody had one at home.)

Me (feeling insulted): I am not joking.

Him: I am not joking either.

Me: I would like to learn some breathing exercises.

Him: We teach all that. Why don’t you see the room?

(I was feeling horrible. He had showed no empathy. He did not ask what my needs were. There is no chance of a customized treatment for me. I have to learn and pick up my own routine. Shit! Here I was, telling him if I could learn exercises that did not put pressure on my stomach and he had made a complete fool out of me. Adding to my embarrassment was the fact that the family that was speaking to the Guruji recognized me from the Institute brochure.)

Anyways, I went inside the hall and the adjoining baths…the hall was dark and dreary looking with the walls full of Guruji’s photographs in different mudras…a teacher was taking a class.

On my way out I just asked what the monthly charges were, and left.

The advantage with the Yoga class is that I will not find it hard to take the practice home…it does not need equipment, or a pool or any apparatus.

But my experience with the Guru was not good. And I can’t help thinking that if not him, I don’t have much chances of learning Yoga anyways in the near future.

But I miss the lack of appropriate guidance/ customization.

  2. I like pp suggestion -- if you don't like the teacher you will not like going and will not be consistent about going. It's tough enough to do if you DO like going once you're there :) GL with the decision!

  3. I'm glad you didn't spend the money first and then find out what a jerk the guy was.

May I make a suggestion? Do you have a private place at home where you can jump rope? Garage, back yard or even inside if ceilings are high enough? It is excellent aerobic exercise, you can go at your own pace, it's cheap, and no one needs to see you do it. I began only being able to jump 10 times before having to stop and catch my breath. Before long I worked my way up to 150 consecutive jumps! With short breaks I could jump 500 times about 20 minutes. You lose weight, increase stamina and improve lung function. All with a child's $2.50 jump rope!

  4. the jump rope is a great idea, I think I may die trying to do it though, I go walking everynight and love it because it is "my" time

  5. WOW, I can't believe he was so rude to you! I'm sending vibes in the hopes he stubbes his toe! I think your best options are what has already been suggested. I think that if you go there for classes, you'll have a negitive energy because you were treated so rudly. Good luck, let me know what you decide!

  7. Yikes! He was terribly rude. That experience definitely would have rubbed the wrong way. Good luck with deciding how to move forward.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. ICLW.

  8. Guruji, with all due respect, sounds like a fuckwit with no sense and even less sensibility.

I would have picked walking and/or swimming, although my froggy swimming style is yet to be defined in the classy world of sleek swimstars!

I'm currently sitting at 110 kilos and not proud of it, once I get off this pelvic/bed rest gig I will be resuming my walking activities. I remember yoga from high school and boy even though I did it fine, it sucked major arse. Unfortunately with my paranoid, my spot weight training is out of the question. (I like muscles!)

But... don't put up with some rude, old guruji type. someone suggested dvds, they work just as well. well, sort of, unless you want a personal trainer - a rude butthole making nongy remarks all the time type personal trainer. I'd rather live without that. =)

In 2006, I weighed more than what I do now. With walking and eating one real meal a day (not healthy in retrospect), I lost 32 kilos in 6 months. I was about 85 kilos (not too shabby for my height!) when we started IVF towards the end of the year. oh, and then came the IVF med bloating...and the comfort eating...then the grief eating...more med bloating... tis a vicious cycle.

Now I'm sure that even though my BMI is over the roof, it has nothing to do with my infertility because I was a LOT lighter when carrying Janaki and look how that turned out. Bleh. Bitter, much?

Good luck with these weighty issues!

    xx

Now I command thee to smile all day. Except maybe not to Guruji.
